Seated on the top level of Holland Road Shopping Centre, the café witnesses the vibrant Holland Village come alive at night. No. 5 Emerald Hill Cocktail Bar

Known as No.5 to its committed regulars, this classic, unpretentious speakeasy is housed in a 1910 Peranakan two-level shop house. The bar in the main room displays spirits, beers and liqueurs beneath a wooden platform but we like the cosy back bar where drinkers sit on soft cushions or recline on Persian carpets as if transported to a Middle Eastern bordello. Live music on level two detracts form the overall intimacy but who cares when you're holding court while holding a Sling or a Mai Tai.

Wala Wala Cafe Bar Singapore

Set in Holland Village, a part of Singapore that could be a chic version of Cheltenham, well-to-do locals and ex-pats come to chill out in a lively downstairs bar serving beer, wine and Singapore Slings, and then head upstairs for live music and tail-shaking. Regulars dress down and are more concerned with getting the drinks in than with posing, which is fine by us. We like the terrace seating area of the bar, where you can take your drink on a hot night and soak up the atmosphere under the stars. No need to get there too early either - Happy Hours lasts from opening time until 9pm.
